Department Information

Converse County established the GIS Department in 2006. The department is responsible for the development of the County's baseline digital spatial databases and for providing up to date mapping and data services to Converse County's departments, citizens, law enforcement and local government.
Other duties may include but are not limited to: overseeing the acquisition of new ariel photography, creating custom maps, maintaining and troubleshooting for various departments using GIS software, and remote data sensing.
The department is also responsible for the distribution of data, creation of new data layers, custom map generation, and analysing spatial data.
Meet the Staff:
Cory McMahon, County GIS Coordinator, graduated from Black Hills State University in 1996. He spent 5 years with the South Dakota Division of Forestry where he began using GIS in 1995. In 2000, he began working in Gillette, WY with a private GIS firm and in the Oil and Gas Industry. In 2002, Cory found himself back home in Sioux Falls, SD working at the USGS EROS Data Center. While at EROS, he worked with the National Landcover data development team. He also assisted the science department with developing new techniques using remote sensing to map urban development. In 2006, Cory accepted the position as the Converse County, WY GIS Coordinator, along with the opportunity to move back to the mountains. Cory is married with three daughters and is an avid fan of the outdoors.
